Coulee Summer

Painting inspired by Driftless Area, Recent Work

Coulee Summer, oil painting by Iowa artist Fred Easker.

Oil on canvas

A coulee is a steep-walled valley shaped by ancient water erosion in the Driftless Area. This scene, from southwest Wisconsin, captures one of those characteristic folds in the land where ridges and shadows repeat in rhythmic layers. I was drawn to the energy of the young trees along the ridge and the abstract patterns cast by the intense August light. The composition became less about literal description and more about how light and form suggest movement and renewal—a quiet pulse within a landscape shaped by time and persistence.

All paintings are inspired by actual places in the landscape.
