Spring Symphony

Painting inspired by Eastern Iowa, Recent Work

Spring Symphony, oil painting by Iowa artist Fred Easker.

Landscape paintings with clouds are common, but for me they are a particular challenge—a painting can easily become about the clouds or about the land, and it’s difficult to strike the right balance. On a business errand drive, I watched an extraordinary display of clouds forming, billowing upward, and mutating for miles. Worried about driving off the road, I pulled over and simply watched. In the studio, I set those clouds above a simple landscape I had been saving for years—land that persists, unmoving, while the action plays out around it. The stillness of the ground allows the sky to take center stage, the two together holding a quiet harmony.

All paintings are inspired by actual places in the landscape.
