Goose Island Afternoon

Painting inspired by Driftless Area, Recent Work

Goose Island Afternoon, oil painting by Iowa artist Fred Easker.

At Goose Island County Park, a built-up road winds through backwaters, linking low-lying islands before opening onto the main channel of the Mississippi River. I often scout here for painting possibilities, drawn by the views of both bluffs and river. On this day, I went searching for that afternoon light—the kind that deepens the greens of the marsh and edges the distant trees in gold. The water lay still, reflecting sky and shadow as the scene unfolded with the unhurried grace of the river itself.

All paintings are inspired by actual places in the landscape.
